Frank Marshall (1877–1944) was an American chess grandmaster renowned for his aggressive, tactical style and significant contributions to chess in the early 20th century. Born in New York City, he became one of the world's top players, competing in elite tournaments and challenging for the world championship in 1907 against Emanuel Lasker, though he lost decisively. Marshall's legacy includes his famous "Marshall Gambit" in the Ruy Lopez, a bold opening that reflects his attacking philosophy. He also founded the Marshall Chess Club in 1915, a hub for chess enthusiasts that remains influential today. His creative play and enduring impact earned him a place among the original five grandmasters recognized by FIDE in 1950.
